Free Pianos Aren't Free

So you’ve decided it’s time to bring a piano into your home. You head online because you know there are tons of pianos listed on Facebook Marketplace for free and the best things in life are free right?

WRONG

Would you look for free cars listed on facebook marketplace with the intention of driving it several times a week for several years down the line? And would you buy this car without it being inspected by a licensed mechanic? Or without test driving it? Or without knowing its service and maintenance history?

I’m guessing you would not. And you should treat piano-buying in the same way.

Pianos are beautiful instruments that double as beautiful furniture pieces, but they are also pieces of technology and machinery. There are several thousand individual parts inside pianos, and remember if you have to replace one part, it is likely you will have to multiply that by 88 depending on the state of the piano you are looking at.

Pianos listed for free are free because they have no value. Buying something worth $0 is not a great investment in any aspect of life.

There are tons of low-cost, good quality pianos out there, and there are also many, many benefits of buying from a piano store vs from a stranger on the internet.

For example, when you buy from a piano store, you are buying a piano that is in good shape and is serviced regularly. And not only do you know you are getting a piano that’s been taken care of, buying from a store usually also means the piano will be under warranty for a number of years, they’ll likely deliver the piano for you, and it’ll come with a follow up service tuning once the piano has settled into your home environment.

I could dive into this topic even deeper, but I’ll leave you with these ideas to think about. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, or even if you’ve found a piano online you might be interested in, I’d be happy to take a look at it and give my initial thoughts and feedback.
